…to choose a CCM Premier from TCS

With a history dating back 180 years, John Price and Sons Ltd is one of the longest-established printers in the Midlands. The current management team of Peter Harrold and Maurice Price have been at the helm for over 30 years, and with this kind of experience it is perhaps unsurprising that the company continues to be a successful full-service B2 commercial printer.

One of the secrets to the company's longevity is a policy of constant renewal from pre-press to finishing to ensure the most productive and cost effective equipment is running in each department. To this end, the latest arrival at the company's base in Bilston is a CCM Premier 115 guillotine supplied by TCS (Terry Cooper Services). "One of our guillotines was reaching the end of its lifespan,," says Joint MD Peter Harrold. "We reasoned that it was time to buy a new machine, and because of problems with our old supplier we looked for an alternative."

He continues: "We had used TCS on the service side for some time and always been more than happy with them, so it seemed like a natural choice to look at the CCM Premier. The way it operates turned out to be reassuringly familiar, and the price was right. We don't skimp with equipment, it has to be robust and reliable but also sophisticated and the CCM is highly programmable, easy to use and accurate – it ticked all the boxes."

The CCM Premier 115 is now one of two B1 sized guillotines at John Price and Sons. "We're a B2 printer, but we find it very useful to have larger machines which we can use to pre-cut B1 sheets," says Mr Harrold. "For instance, where the paper grain needs to be in the right direction for folding along a solid, cutting down from B1 can be the only solution."

TCS also supplied two palette lifters for use with the CCM Premier. "Mechanical paper handling makes a difference to health and safety and of course contributes to higher productivity," says Mr Harrold. John Price and sons recently achieved ISO:14001 (environmental) accreditation, in addition to ISO:9001:2000 (Quailty Management) which came several years ago. It has 38 staff and a wide client base including several local authorities and large PLCs in the Midlands area.
